      week 2  understanding basic concepts: ageing, life course, age and development, ageism, stereotypes of older people and the realization in daily life contexts (I)

          week 4 understanding research approaches to language and ageing studies (I): communication research paradigm

            week 6 understanding research approaches to language and ageing studies  (II): gerontological sociolinguistic paradigm

              week 7 : media representaitons of older people (I): communication appraoch  

              case study: comparative study of advertising portrayals of older people in the UK and Taiwan

               

              • 8. 11月 1日 - 11月 7日

                week 8 :  research method: Content Analysis (practice) 

                media representaitons of older people (II): gerontological sociolinguistic appraoch case study: older people's dating ads (J. Coupland) 

                 

                • 9. 11月 8日 - 11月 14日

                  week 9 : a pilot study using content analysis: look for 20 TV ads (of your interest) to analyze representations of various kinds of older people (of your choice), by following Chen, 2015's study and her coding manual, list your youtube sources of the samples (hyperlinks), report your topic, your analysis (freuqncy in tables and descriptions of statistics), coding categories (operational definitions) and present your views/ explanations of the pattenrs (i.e. ideological effects and why such patterns can be found). in a short essay of 400-600 words. you can work as a pair sharing the same set of data but report your intercoder agreement level in your respectively written essay (this will be fun if you try)

                      week 11 :  CDA : discursive construction of older people, ideological decoding in Taiwanese newspapers (Chen, 2017)

                      • 12. 11月 29日 - 12月 5日

                        week 12 :  CDA : discursive construction of older people, ideological decoding in Taiwanese newspapers (Chen, 2017)

                          week 13 : intergenerational communicaiton (I): communication paradigm

                          basic conceps: communicaiton accommodation theory, studies on communication perceptions of intergenerational communication in communicaiton and social psychological disciplines

                          • 14. 12月 13日 - 12月 19日

                            week 14:  intergenerational communicaiton (II): gerontological sociolinguistic paradigm 

                            basic concepts:  painful-self-disclosure; self-disenfranchisement; social functions of age-telling strategies;  young-old talks versus old-old talks (conversation analysis)

                              week 15: intergeneraitonal communication (III):   conversation analysis : young-old first encounter talks in Taiwan  (ref. Chen, 2017)

                                week 16: communicaiton with older people in service (I) : senior education contexts ; teacher-student interactions ; communicaiton strategies adopted by teachers of senior education (ref. Chen, 2019)

                                • 17. 01月 3日 - 01月 9日

                                  week 17: oral report on your reserach findings (a small scale) 25%

                                  • 18. 01月 10日 - 01月 16日

                                    week 18:  final report 25%

                                    submit an essay of your findings (1000-1500 words)
