      How does human communication work in general? 

      When do you intend not to cooperate in talks? What do you try to imply? 

      Learning theories on the cooperative principles and the violations of them to imply other unspoken meanings in social interactions (theories will be tested so you can't miss this week)

      • 3. 28 September - 4 October

        An in-class test: when do you know it is time to laugh when watching a sit-com? 

        A test based on an American drama "Friends" will be given in class for your understanding of the theories taught in week 2 

        • 4. 5 October - 11 October

          Human communication and the general principle: FACE is important but how do we design our talks to appeal to others' FACE? Concpets to know: Positive face and negative face; Positive politeness and negative politeness  

          Please NOTE that your understanding of the theory regarding positive and negative politeness strategies will be evaluated in the WEEK 6 and 7 oral test. 

          • 5. 12 October - 18 October

            Gender and communication : gender stereoytpes; socialization of gender roles; communication diversity in ways to talk by gender 

            • 6. 19 October - 25 October

              oral tests: apply what you learn in week 2-4 to design your conversations (topics to be assigned) in English; share your experiences of using the general principles of human communication in real social interactions with others (4 in a group, finished within 15 minutes a section)

              • 7. 26 October - 1 November

                oral tests: apply what you learn in week 2-4 to design your conversations (topics to be assigned) in English; share your experiences of using the general principles of human communication in real social interactions with others (4 in a group, finished within 15 minutes a section)

                • 8. 2 November - 8 November

                  a movie to be played in class for analysis on gender stereotypes (as materials for week 9 mid-term test)

                  • 9. 9 November - 15 November

                    mid-term exam: an online moodle test (you don't have to come to the classroom) on the movie played in week 8 (reflection on gener steroetypes mainly and perhaps some age stereotypes as well for issues taught in weeks 13-14)

                    • 10. 16 November - 22 November

                      Gender and communication :  connection/status in language, gendered language form 

                      • 11. 23 November - 29 November

                        Gender and communication: report versus rapport talk, chatting by men and women; gossiping by men and women

                        communication about love (love styles)

                        • 12. 30 November - 6 December

                          communication in romantic relationships (self-disclosure, love development)

                          communication in romantic relationships (conflicts and ending)

                          • 13. 7 December - 13 December

                            communication in romantic relationships (conflicts and ending)

                            communication and older age: how older age is perceived and how we adapt in talks with older people

                            • 14. 14 December - 20 December

                               communication and age: silver marketing and media portrayals of older people 

                              • 15. 21 December - 27 December

                                group presentation week:  each group 15 minutes 4-6 and come before your assigned time slot
