Freshman English (2) (Level 1) aims to develop students’ basic reading skills in
English. A unified English final exam is offered to evaluate students’ progress. This
course is designed to help build up students’ vocabulary, strengthen their foundation
in sentence patters, and improve their grammar skills. With authentic materials
related to students’ daily experience, they will be able to develop a basic foundation
in reading and further be able to read and understand a variety of articles by using
appropriate reading strategies.

The goal of this course is to familiarize students with daily conversations in English, such as greetings and self-introduction, simple instructions and requests, and short but appropriate responses to questions and requests. Grammar focus: the use of tenses (e.g. present simple, present perfect, past simple, and past continuous) of the verb "to be" and other common action verbs in questions, statements and negatives; subject-verb agreement; adjectives (including participles and superlatives); modals; pronouns (including possessives); demonstratives and clauses (e.g. adjective and conditional clauses). Vocabulary focus: personal information and preferences, activities and experiences, appearance and personality, natural environment and disasters, etc.
