Conversations in English, or any language, are not just about using correct grammar and vocabulary. More importantly, they require appropriate adjustments based on different social interaction contexts, including social relationships and identities, to adhere to the principles of politeness in interpersonal communication and the norms of sociocultural interaction. Therefore, this course is not simply an English conversation class. Students will explore key theories in pragmatics, such as the Cooperative Principle, the Politeness Principle, and Face Theory. They will apply these theories to develop effective English conversational skills. Additionally, students will learn strategies for communicating effectively in specific social contexts, enhancing their awareness of the pragmatic appropriateness of their English conversational behavior.
