Materials research used to be scatered in the fileds of physics, chemisrty, machinery, etc., but it gradually became an indpendent subject in the 1950s, called "engineering materials science". Engineering materials explore the properties of materials and are affected by their structure, composition, and manufacturing process. This course focuses on the discussion of metal materials. The main teaching content includes:
1. Introduction to the mechanical properties of materials, including: tensile, hardness, impact, creep and
fatigue analysis, etc.;
2. Crystallography, including: crystal structure, crystal defects(vacancies, dislocations and grain boundaries)
and structure analysis methods.;
3. Phase changes, including: phase diagram introduction, phase transformation and heat treatment basis;
4. Diffusion.;
5. Alloy type and design introduction, including: iron, aluminum, titanium, magnesium, nichel and copper-
based alloy, etc.;
6. Others, including: corrosion characteristics, non-metallic material characteristics, etc.
In addition, this course also emphasizes the introduction of industrial practical cases, including: case introduction of golf head industry, powder metallurgy, biomedical industry and traditional metal manufactureing industry.
