The content and teaching-pedagogical approach adopted in this series of two courses
encourages student to pro-actively engage in the basic skills of listening and speaking.
Topics encountered in current day-to-day needs, study, social and business matters help
students to gain private and public confidence in the use of normative language. The learning
methods are designed to provide a preliminary subjective evaluation of one’s own listening
ability, and to objectively assess one’s self-progress in clarifying meaning of the spoken
word. Such methods progressively include (i) passive listening, (ii) active response and (iii)
vocabulary development and reinforcement through planned pronunciation practice.
